“Jesus Calling” and the 2024 PCA General Assembly

Many Christians are aware of the baneful influence of the book, Jesus Calling (2004) and its sequels Jesus Today (2012), and Jesus Always (2016) by Sarah Young. If you aren’t, these books are collections of devotional messages in the voice of Jesus that Young says she received from Him. These blasphemous books have sold over 45 million units, outselling The Purpose Driven Life and virtually every Reformed book you’ve ever heard of, and have deceived millions of people.

Given the nature of her work, most people would probably guess (as I did) that Sarah Young was a new-age fringe Christian or at best a Bethel-style “Prophet” – and they’d be wrong.

Sarah Young (1946-2023) was a lifelong member of the PCA, a graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary, a long-time MTW missionary to Japan, and a member of Christ Presbyterian PCA in Franklin, TN where she and her husband ministered after their return from the mission field in 2013. Her funeral, at which former Moderator of the PCA General Assembly, Dr. Charles McGowan officiated, and at which a portion of Jesus Calling was read was also held at Christ Presbyterian, PCA. Her obituary glowingly mentions her books. (You’ll find all of this confirmed in her obituary and her MTW Missionary Bio at the bottom of this article)

Given the nature of her “New Revelation from Jesus” writing it is bewildering that for over two decades during which her books received massive publicity and were bought by millions of people worldwide no one in authority over her in the PCA told her to stop writing falsehoods and none of the ministries she worked with disavowed her books.

Thankfully, Overture 33 sent to the 2024 PCA General Assembly (June 10-14, 2024) by PCA Pastor Benjamin Inman seeks to erect a study committee to determine why the PCA has never addressed these books.

You can find the Overture (#33) here: https://pcaga.org/resources/#overtures

Please join me in praying that our sister NAPARC denomination adopts this overture.

About Andrew Webb

I was converted out of paganism and the occult in 1993 and while I was initially Charismatic/Arminian in my theology, I became Reformed and Presbyterian through bible study and the influence of ministries like RC Sproul's. After teaching in local bible studies, and taking seminary courses part time, I began to feel called to the ministry in 1997. I was Ordained as an RE at Christ Covenant PCA in Hatboro, PA in 2000 and as a TE by Central Carolina Presbytery in 2001 when I was called to be the Organizing Pastor/Church Planter for Providence PCA Mission, Cross Creek PCA's church plant in Fayetteville, NC (home to Ft. Bragg and Pope Airforce Base). In 2005 when the Providence PCA Particularized I was blessed to be called by the congregation to be their Pastor
